The School Libraries Project
Inspiring the Best in Our Children

The goal of the School Libraries Project is to transform eight public elementary and middle school libraries in the Capitol Hill neighborhood that are antiquated and inadequate into vital learning spaces that will inspire students to learn and explore.

The Project was born out of a grassroots coalition of PTA Presidents, school leaders, and community activists.  Inspired by a similar project in New York City and locally in Washington, D.C., the intent is to completely renovate and modernize these public school libraries. This revitalization is being achieved through a unique public-private partnership between District of Columbia Public Schools and the all-volunteer School Libraries Project group.

The libraries at Brent Elementary School, Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School, and Stuart Hobson Middle School were renovated during the summer of 2006.

The remaining five libraries at Tyler Elementary, Payne Elementary, Watkins Elementary, Maury Elementary, and Peabody Elementary were renovated during the summer of 2007.
